FSBreak 19: New Hamburger Flight, Aerosoft's New Simulator, Avsim is back (Almost), Free Citation X, and More!
It is not often that we bring particular attention to AVSIM Volunteers, but the events of the last 16 days demand that we do so. The AVSIM Editorial Staff would like to put the shine of the public spotlight on these hard working guys, so that you know the team that put the AVSIM Humpty Dumpty back together again. Matt Johnson, John Binner, Stanly Thompson-Harmon, "The Un-Named One": With their special forensics talents, AVSIM was able to restore all of the web site, all of the forums and we anticipate 90% of the library including all FSX and FS9 files. We expect to be able to serve files dating back to FS98. Thank you UNKNOWN GUY for your assistance and skills.
Mathijs Kok, from Aerosoft says on their forums:
Following up on a topic on another part of these forums... Aerosoft is currently seriously investigating the development of a new simulator, directly aimed at replacing FSX. This project is in very early stages, far from even started. We are now talking to each other and developers we trust to come up with a project definition. With this definition we'll look at the market potential and finances, we are talking a multimillion Euro project here after all. Now the investments do not scare us but the building of a platform we can all agree on bothers us tremendously. If we get that wrong we lost even before we start. You all know that Aerosoft (and me especially) believes in working with customers...

From the MyTrafficX Forums [Link]:
After a long time, finally a second good AI traffic package for FSX has hit the market today. Flight 1 has published its long awaited Ultimate Traffic 2. Quite a while ago, Tom Main and I agreed to cooperate for the benefit of our common customers... One of the outcomes is the fact that UT2 contains some models you know already from MyTraffic, with a small subset of the paints. UT2 aim's it's models to be around the schedules they have, so it only contains those airlines that they got hands on the schedules. With the new editor that you find in the Patch52a uploaded today, you can set for each airline if it is contained in UT2... You can easily create a set of schedules for those airlines that aren't part of UT2.

The 'Mile High' $100 Hamburger
We did some long range flying during our last $100 Hamburger flight, this week we’re going to increase the challenge with some mountain flying. There are a few things to keep in mind with mountain flight:
- Remember, don’t use an underpowered aircraft. Use something with some climbing ability. A turboprop should be a fine choice, or a performance single prop. The DC-3 with FS9/FSX may make a good choice, or a high performance single prop aircraft.
- Plan out your route before hand, you don’t want to get caught in a mountain range your aircraft can’t tackle!
- Mountainous terrain makes navigation difficult, you aren’t able to spot the airport from 10 miles out. You are going to have to use your charts and natural terrain as navigation. I found it very helpful to use rivers and roads in FS as an excellent navigation aid. (Where there are roads, there are people, right?)

Using AI Aircraft with VATSIM from Jason
Brendan might be the best person to answer this as I noticed this on some of his screenshots on the fusion airways website. I'm using squawkbox to connect to VATSIM and notice that a lot of the other aircraft flying around tend to have a generic paint scheme called VIP. For example, if I see a flight that's labeled UAL8198, I would expect the flight to have a paint scheme that resembles United Airlines. Instead what I see is a generic paint scheme that is included with squawkbox. I can't remember specifically if this happens with UAL flights - I think most UAL flights come up ok, this is just an example of what happens with some of the more obscure airlines. I've done a ton of googling to figure out if there is a way to use Word of AI aircraft or other AI traffic addons like My Traffic X within squawkbox but the only thing I found close to what I want to do is this forum post: http://forums.vatsim.net/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=39108 That post is close but it seems very time consuming to process every aircraft/paint scheme. I noticed that Brendan has a number of paint schemes for other aircraft and I was wondering how he did it. Did he find an SMS file (a file used by squawkbox to map the AI plane to the one on VATSIM) or did he enter all that on his own. I don't mind if you hold this email until the next time Brendan is on the show - I think he would be able to provide some really good info for those of us using VATSIM.
Aerosoft's San Francisco City Addon
Love your show. Keep it going. Just thought I Let you know that I have Aerosoft’s San Francisco City Addon and I'm not seeing any drop in frame rates. My system is a duel-core 2.6 with 4 gigs ram. My video card is the Nvidia 7950 with 512 memory ram. Great piece of scenery. Great addon. So don't be affraid to install it. The price is right too. I've been flying FS since the very beginning, FS1. It's amazing where we've come with the program since then. I wish you great success with the show and look forward to more great podcasts for a long time.
Thanks Gerry! Here are some screenshots from Aerosoft's new SF Scenery:
